Ridley thanks for coming back to us! We missed you but we realize there are actually only 24 hours in a day and you must be burning them up...I just want you to know that I am ready and waiting for Killer Weekend to be released! I am getting so excited I feel like a kid at Christmas time, kinda giddy! I'll be posting all about it on bookcrossing.com when we are closer to the release date and who knows I may just start a release challenge to see who has the most Ridley books to wild release on a specific date. Last year we did a challenge on Stephen Kings b-day (I believe they do it every year). Or would you prefer a release challenge on your b-day? Its up to you, or maybe I'll post that we should release anybodys book with the words Killer or Weekend in the title...I'm not sure right now which kind of a challenge it will be! I'll think about it. Anyways welcome back.
Thanks, Inksmudge. The challenge that my new publisher has given me, is to get as many of the site visitors and readers who think they are going to buy KW to do so in the first week it's out. It makes a much bigger impact on the best seller list. Haven't quite figured out how to do that, but your challenge sounds like it might help. The trick is to get anyone willing to play along to tell other readers about the book in that first week or two. One thing we're considering is releasing a short story that has the same characters (through the site) just before publication, maybe on Amazon, and giving RP site visitors a purchase code that lets them download the short story for free. But thanks for the enthusiasm. It's exactly what I (and Putnam need) for Killer Weekend. I'm very excited about the book -- it's been so long! -- and I want it to out gangbusters. Ridley
I don't know about anybody else but I always buy a book I am anticipating the day it is released. It's one of the reasons that I don't like Amazon. I hate to wait. You can bet I'll buy it that day!
Well, I am off to meet the husband downtown (via Houston traffic) , and am going to listen to Ridley read The Art of Deception!
Inksmudge- Sounds like a great plan but Ridley's books are among those that I keep, in case a re-read is required!
I always buy the book the first day it's available and I have already been spreading the word about it's release. Unfortunately I only belong to a couple of other web sites, but I guess if they pass it on, and those people pass it on, etc., etc., lots of people will hear about it!
I feel like Inksmudge. I can't wait. I onl have about 20 books on my TBR pile, but the number one with a bullet is Killer.
Pam & Carol- I also have all of Ridleys books on my personal collection bookshelf (I would never release those) but I also tend to buy his books in paperback when they are released so I usually have duplicate copies. Also when I find them at sales like my local library and thrift stores I usually buy them to wild release them too! And just about the time I try to release one I find myself re-reading it before I let it go... :-) I don't know why but I have a terrible 'attachment' to Ridleys books and find it very difficult to let them go.
Inksmudge: what a nice to thing to hear: the attachment. And thanks for think-tanking on how to get the word out as we near July.. All ideas are welcome. Ridley
Ridley! Glad you're back, I'd about given up hope. I was checking your Appearances, and I don't see anything in So. Cal. Are there more appearances in the works (to support Killer Weekend, I would assume?)
Sorry to have been gone so long guys. Had some personal business to attend to this past week. Gee, almost sound like Ridley. Somehow, I don't think I would draw the crowds he will. Calm down, inksmudge, you aren't leaving any excitement for us. Either that or you are going to explode. If anybody needs a good book to tide them over, try Magic City by James. W. Hall. He writes the Thorn and Florida novels. He, like Hiiasen has Florida down pat and sometimes its a riot. I'm sure Ridley and Dave know Jim. I think they are all a little crazy (little??). Right Ridley?
I know Jim Hall well. He's a great guy and terrific writer. And you're right: those south Florida writers are out of their minds -- a requirement, I think, before you're allowed to buy real estate down there. R
Whew, I thought I was going crazy! I couldn't log on to post my comment and I thought I was loosing my mind. It kept telling me my password was incorrect and I know I was typing it correctly, so I thought maybe I had used one that I'll never again remember! Took me a while but I finally crawled over that hurdel. Anyway...Carol how can I calm down when I know that if Killer Weekend has a killer week or two a new Boldt might actually crawl and inch or two closer to us? I know which side my bread is buttered on and I plan on taking advantage of that. But actually I think Putnam is hoping we will all fall in love with Walt Fleming and forget all about Lou. Do any of you think that will happen? Carol thanks for the recommendation of Magic City, I've never read anything by James W. Hall and maybe its time I did.
Maybe you are right, inksmudge. But I am afraid too much positive buzz for Walt will delay Lou. Darned if you do, darned if you don't. I had password troubles too. seems I have to use the NEW blogger and Google. Get the feeling Mr. Gates feels Google nipping at his heels? Ridley, thanks for realizing most of us in South Florida are nuts, but then you have been hanging around with Dave a lot. Been on our roads? Aren't they a wonder? Of course we have to be nuts where your real estate is only safe from December thru May. Somebody again tell me why I am painting my house now?
I recently read your book Parallel Lies after someone told me that my small hometown, Genoa, Illinois, played a key part in the book. Seeing the name of my hometown in a mystery book was something else - it's rare that people outside of the immediate area have even heard of Genoa. I was curious as to why you chose Genoa for the location of the train accident in this book? Are you somehow familiar with the city, or was it a randomly selected small midwestern town? As I read, I envisioned that you meticulously scoped out the city and hand-picked which train crossing the accident happened at, drove by the high school where Alvarez was employed, etc. but the realist in me figures you just found a city on a map that fit your needs. Can you shed some light? Thanks!
Jeremy: I had just moved to St Louis when writing Parallel Lies. My sister lives near Chicgao, and Genoa, as it turns out, had a malfunctioning railroad crossing arm that had briefly made the news. I have been out that way, but as I recall I didn't do any on-site location work as I often do in writing my novels (as I have with Killer Weekend). Hope this helps. Ridley
Ridley, I belong to a message board that is not specific to one author or subject and one of the members (from out of the USA) asked a question about one of your books. Don't know which book, but the question was, 'What is a gimme cap?'. Can you clear up the mystery for him?
Thanks, Ridley. We weren't sure if it was a baseball cap, one of those caps that leave the top of the head open to the elements, or a cap with a colored plastic visor. I appreciate you answering the question so quickly, now if only 'Killer Weekend' would be released that fast.
HELLO!!! Where did everyone go??? I'm beginning to get kinda worried. I haven't logged on in so long here that I once again forgot my log-on and password, good thing I've only got a couple that I keep rotating. Everybody must be really busy.
Hi, inksmudge. I am still here. I have been checking regularly, but haven't seen any other posts - and no new threads for May. Guess everybody took an early vacation.
I'm around, but I've been practicing for the Rockbottom Remainders show. Did everyone get the newsletter? If not, you're not registered (from the site). Off to NY tomorrow to join Dave and start singing. THE BAND IS ON GOOD MORNING AMERICA on Thursday morming (May 31)
I wish I was attending BEA. Sigh... nope. My agent will be there though, I think. Now I need to check with her. I am going to thrillerfest this year though.
And your book tour doesn't come anywhere near me, sigh... Thrillerfest should be fantastic and I look forward to it. I've recently switched genres from romantic suspense to straight supsense, so this is the perfect place for me.
Guess I've got to watch good morning america on thursday - any idea of time?
Watched GMA this morning - very cool! Nice job. I'm totally impressed. So was my teenage son. You just made reading/writing cool. What more could a mother ask for.
Welcome to Prime Crime, where I'll post links and offer ideas that will hopefully provoke conversation. NO NEED TO REGISTER!!! You may be asked to match a word image in order for us to combat spam. Click ARCHIVE at bottom to see all threads for the MONTH. I'll also host on-going "rooms" where a topic or a book can be discussed with all of us participating. Thanks for chiming in. Anybody else waiting for Ridley to answer Jeremys questions? I thought they were great and want to hear the answers too.
Wow! Love the change to the we3bsite. Really revs up the excitement level for what's coming.

A gimme cap is a baseball cap that's given as a freebie -- like the ones the tractor companies give out. They gimme the the cap, for free.
