Hey Carol, are you there? CNN is showing some pretty devastating stuff from the tornadoes. I don't know where in Florida you live, but please let everyone know you are OK.
Hey Dean- Somehow I imagined you snowed in! Jan in this part of the world is usually sunny and cool, not cold, but this Jan has been cold, wet and gloomy. Yuk! Somedays it's all I can do to keep from sticking my head in the oven! But all is not lost when I have something good to read- right now I'm reading TJefferson Parker's "Silent Joe". Quirky character, good story. What are you reading?
Thanks for the concern, Pam and Dean. The tornadoes hit Central Florida when the warm front down here collided with a cold front moving in. Luckily by the time the cold front got here the worst was over and all we had was a soggy Super Bowl.
OOps, forgot to say what I was reading. I am reading Tim Dorsey's Florida Roadkill and not enjoying it too much. Can't decide whether to read Crichton's 'Next' or Robert B. Parker's Jesse Stone novel 'High Profile'. I think 'High Profile will win.

I've have heard nothing good about 'hannibal Rising' book, or movie. I think the clue was that the movie was released at almost the same time as the book. Makes one think the book was written directly for the screen. After hearing all that, I decided to forego Hannibal and head straight for Chrichton. 02.12.07 Carol
Hey Dean, I just read and saved an article from the NYT this AM by Crichton (sp?) about patents being taken out on genes. Very interesting. He really is very forward thinking. I wish I'd known you needed Greg Isles new book, I could have sent it to you! I just took 4 bags of books to the Half price bookstore. I was running out of room. I have a hard time giving up books that I liked, but I don't want to end up on Oprah talking about my hoarding!
Hi guys, just wanted to chime in with some info about sharing books. I belong to a web group called bookcrossing.com where we release books for others to enjoy and hopefully they will pick them up and journal about how they found the book and maybe even critique the book in some way. I would love to see some of you guys on that site too because I feel I am the only one there who is Mr. Pearson's biggest fan and I would love to let others on that site know that there are many more of us around! Oh and Dean, which Michael Connelly books do you have? I was looking for the paperback of The Concrete Blonde and a couple of others that I can't remember right now.
Hey Inksmudge, glad to see you here. I'll definitely check out the website. What do you mean by "release'? Is it like with fishing, when they post "catch and release"? My only problem is that I tend to want to keep the books of the authors that I love or I'd send you my copy of the Concrete blond! I did oddly enough just see it at Sams last week. I do like the idead of sharing books though. I too like to talk up Mr. Pearson. I always feel like it might help me get more out of him!! (in the way of books, mind you) Selfish, I know, but such is the life of a fan.
Dean, Spring is in the air. Can't you just hear the crack of the bat? I'm so excited when baseball season starts, I get almost giddy. Can't wait. There's probably a psychiatric disorder that would explain it, but I don't care!
Oh Pam, we do think alike! I just love to talk about my love of reading Ridley books. I do it as often as I can. As for 'releasing' a book, it is just our way of saying that we want to share with anyone who wants to read our books. I have many books that I do not release because they are special to me. Such as my collection of Ridley's books in hardback and yes you guessed it--also the paperbacks because I had him autograph some of them when I met him at a booksigning a few years ago. They belong in my Personal Collection but on the website you can still see that they are there on my virtual bookshelf. Those I will never release! Also on my bookshelf you can see books that I have not read yet and books that are available because I've read them and want to release them either by 'wild releasing' or by sending to someone who requests it. Also you can see the titles of the books I have already 'wild released' and know that they are out traveling and hopefully someday someone will journal that they have it. It's all just for fun and the catch rate is pretty low but thats not exactly why I do it. I do it because I enjoy promoting reading and I want people to find a book and pick it up and read it. And also because it is an expensive hobby and rather than have all my books gathering dust on my shelf after I've read them I prefer that someone else gets to enjoy it too. Of course I pick up alot of books at sales at my local library or thrift stores and those I 'wild release' after reading. Check out my bookshelf on bookcrossing.com under my name inksmudge and see if there is something you'd like. Me-- I'm off to Sams Club, thanks for the info!
Carol- Hi fellow bcer! Nice to know I am not the only Ridley fan over there. Do you go to the forums to post? I usually do a quick search to see if there is anything I want to post on and then finish up there and come here to see who has been posting. What screen name do you go by on that site? Maybe I'll take a peek at your bookshelf...do you trade books with other bcers or do you just prefer to wild release? I only used to wild release but then I started receiving books in the mail from others and so started shipping out a few myself. If somebody finds something they want and the shipping isn't too much then I don't mind sending it out but I only sent out one book international and won't do it again because of the cost.
Hi, inksmudge. Yes I go to a few forums to post.My screen name is Carol. So far all I have done is wild release. I have another stack to release soon. I have never gotten books from others, in fact I don't thin anyone has posted a journal for me. I most release mysteries and thrillers, hence Ridley.
Hey Dean, I think the Celtics just beat the Rockets last night, after they blew a 13 point lead in the 4th quarter (No Tracy McGrady).Things are looking up for your guys!
I bought "The Watchman" today by Robert Crais and the new TJefferson Parker. My husband asked me, "Do they greet you by name now, when you go into Barnes and Noble?" To which I replied, "Why, yes they do, as a matter of fact." Such a smartass. I started the Joe Pike novel and it's really good.
It was good to get the newsletter from Ridley and exciting to think about getting to read something from him soon. When you read about all his projects, it's no wonder he never ended up posting on "Naked Authors"!
Hey Pam, don't count out the Heat, even though it looks like Dwayne is out for the season. I started to read California Girl by Parker and lost interest. I know I have read others of his and liked them, so I will have to put him back on my list. Won't get to it for a long while, my TBR list is near 30. Have to do some sorting if I am ever going to get these read, plus the new ones by Ridley.
Hey Ridley, really cool comments on the new book from most of my favorite authors; Lee Child, Scott Turow, James Patterson!!! I'm really getting excited about the new book now...can hardly wait (as the clock s-l-o-w-l-y tics away).
Hey Ridley,If you're out there maybe you can answer this question. Why are all my favorite authors (guys, I'm talking about) such hair Gods? I mean think about it- you (Ridley), Jeff Parker, Michael Connely, Robert Crais all have great hair! Gobs and gobs of it. What's that about? Is there a secret? Even your bud Dave Barry has alot of great hair (although I'd leave the bowl at home next time he gets a hair cut). Just wondering as I looked at the back cover of the new Jeff Parker book.
Dean-What, no comment about my hair observation? Oh, well. All right. Your book sounds interesting. I just finished Robert Crais/ The Watchman. Just loved that book. If you're a fan of the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike novels it's a must. Then I read T Jefferson Parker's "Storm Runners". Good. Not great. There are other's of his I liked better. Now I'm reading a novel I got at the 1/2 price book store called "Moonlight Hotel" by Scott Anderson, who is a war correspondant and writer. Very good and well written. Not like anything else I've read.
Pam you are too funny! The hair Gods probably just have too much grey matter growing in those craniums stimulating the hair follicles!!! Ha- can't comment on Dave Barry's do cause there isn't one (lol).
Inksmudge, I'm just trying to tease Ridley out of the woodwork. I though he might feel moved to share his views on my Hair God theory, if only to defend his friends haircut! Well, we can only try!
I went to the Miami Heat/Utah Jazz game tonight. Terrific. Looked like Miami was going to get trounced and they came back to score the winning goal with 30 seconds left. 88-86 final score. Shaq and Zo played but Dwayne is still out with his dislocated shoulder.
I have started reading James W. Hall's new book 'Magic City'. I love his character Thorn and since nearly all his books play out in Miami and the Keys you can tell he knows the area.
Hey Everyone- This does seem to be our own private message board, doen't it? I'm sure that will change when Ridley's new book comes out. I've been getting ready to go back to work part-time after 10 yrs at home with my boys. I'm ready, I'm not sure my family is. (Most FAQ's by husband "Are you still going to make my lunch? and "Who's going to walk the dog?" ) You know it's time to go back when you start thinking Oprah is a personal friend!
Dean, I've been meaning to ask you if you've seen that new show called The Black Donnely's"? Seems pretty good, I wondered what you thought of it. As for baseball, I'm waiting to see what tickets we get. Getting excited. Also love to watch college basketball. Only my youngest watches with me.
Just started Laura Lippman's "Charm City". Like the book, not sure if I like the main character Tess. After that I think I may read "The Lion's Game" By Demille.
Carol- Isn't that with one of your favorite characters, John Corey? I read Plum Island years ago and liked it. You reminded me of it when you said something about loving Demille.
Yes, Pam, John Corey is the favorite character of DeMille's characters. You will love 'Plum Island'. John Corey at his best. The same with 'Wild Fire'. Enjoy.
We went to see the Heat vs. the Utah Jazz Tuesday. It went down to the wire with the Heat winning 88-86. Of course we had Shaq and Zo, just a little help there. Dwayne is still healing from his dislocated shoulder. The only problem with pro-basketball is the ticket prices so we don't get to too many games.
Never read a Laura Lipman book. You seem to be giving it a so-so review. Should I put her aside until I have finished 'Magic City' by James W. Hall? His are always terrific and he knows South Florida like the back of his hand. Give him a try if you haven't already.
Hey Dean, my husband watched 'Rome' but I didn't. Sundays I try to catch up on my taping for the week. Besides I have always thought the definitive Rome series was 'I,Claudius' done by the Brits. If you guys are interested in nature, the Discovery Channel is doing a series called 'Planet Earth'. A lot of magazines have trailer DVDs in them. The photography is fantastic and the work they put into it is nothing short of amazing. One photographer spent 45 days in a blind to get a shot. It starts March 25, Discovery Channel, 8 p.m. EDT. If I remember correctly there are 11 episodes.
The weather continues to be beautiful down here, although it has been several months since we had a good rain. They were talking water restrictions, don't know if they did yet. Been a little under the weather and haven't been watching the TV or reading much since I finished 'Magic City'. Which was terrific, as are all Hall's books.
Hey, Hope everyone's animals are OK. We gratefully feed our dog dry food. So far that's suppose to be OK. Scary when you think about those poor animals getting sick from their food.
Ooh, love Dennis Lehane. I'll look for this at my B&N, but lately I've been disappointed by their selection. It seems like they have gobs of books but not the one I want! I tried to find some of the "Naked Authors" books but they didn't have them. I think I may have to go to Amazon.
I watched a little of an Astros pre season game last night, but had to turn it off as they were still behaving like the Astros (Bases loaded and unable to score). I know it's spring, hopefully they will be a new and improved team when the season starts. Had to watch "Lost". I know, I know I don't understand it either but am compelled to watch, as I'm a little in love with Jack. My husband has been watching "Chefography" on the food network. Really interesting seeing the back story on all those food superstars. You'd love it Dean!
Starting a Pellecanos book but am a little tenative cuz I know he is pretty violent. We'll see.
Wow guys Ridley must really be busy! How long has he been MIA? I hope everything is working out for him the way he wants it to. Didn't they used to have on the old web-site a trivia game or something to keep us busy? I kinda remember something like that. Maybe one of our 'regulars' can enlighten me about what happend with that???
There were tqo long-heated discussions that I remember, other than the usual what book are you reading. One that generated a lot of 'talk' was who would be the best actors to plat the different characters. There was also one that got so heated, Heidi, webmaster at the time, pulled it from the board.
Inksmudge- I wish he'd just drop by to say hey once in awhile. That's what I like about naked authors.com Someone posts everyday, usually something interesting and people comment. Ridley was invited to take Thurs I think, but didn't end up doing it.
Carol- Are you referring to the "Body of David Hayes" thing? I missed that but remember hearing about it. I loved that book by the way. Actually read it first and then re-read it after I read the rest in order.I just found "The Art of Deception" cd's at half price book store and bought them because Ridley actually did the reading. I thought it would be cool to listen to the author read his own work.
I'm still looking for the right topics on the blog. I have been on spring break with the family, and so have been absent for 2 weeks. I think these forums should be about what you, the readers, want to discuss; but when they turn to baseball, etc. I tend to tune out for a few days. So I'll work on being here more often and joining the discussions. But I am hard at work -- KILLER WEEKEND is a big book for me, and Putnam and I are working hard to make sure everyone KNOWS ABOUT IT!!! thanks Ridley
Hey Pam, sorry it took me slow long to answer, but it has been a crazy few months down here the last few. We had no problems with the tornadoes, thank heavens, we don't need that on top of hurricanes. We are actually in somewhat of a drought with water restrictions being put in place. Guess that is good for spring training though.
Finished reading James W. Hall's Magic City. A little lighter then his others, be if you want to know what South Florida is like, he paints a great picture of it.

I think these forums should be about what you, the readers, want to discuss; but when they turn to baseball, etc. I tend to tune out for a few days. So I'll work on being here more often and joining the discussions. But I am hard at work -- KILLER WEEKEND is a big book for me, and Putnam and I are working hard to make sure everyone KNOWS ABOUT IT!!!
thanks
Ridley
Hey Pam, sorry it took me slow long to answer, but it has been a crazy few months down here the last few. We had no problems with the tornadoes, thank heavens, we don't need that on top of hurricanes. We are actually in somewhat of a drought with water restrictions being put in place.
Guess that is good for spring training though.
Finished reading James W. Hall's Magic City. A little lighter then his others, be if you want to know what South Florida is like, he paints a great picture of it.
