What has been the defining moment and or decision of your writing career? How much input does your agent have on the work in progress?

Hey Ridley- I am currently reading Michael Connelly's "The Overlook" novella in The New York Times magazine every Sun. Even though I'd prefer a novel, I do enjoy new work from a favorite author. Since you are one of my favs, I'm wondering if you would consider writing something for Boldt in this format?

Anon:

The most recent defining moment was when my daughter asked about how Peter Pan met Captain Hook. That put me on a new road that I very much enjoy.

Pam:
I'd love to write Boldt for the NYTimes Mag -- but they aren't banging down my door for me to do so....
thanks for asking though.

Hey Dean, Just read a piece in the op-ed of NYT by some guy named Leitch(editor of Deadspin.com) about The Cardinals and the post season. Very interesting ( he's a Cardinal fan) I think I could cheer for the Cardinals if it weren't for La Russa. He's the only one I can't stand. Anyway, I too think The Mets may just be gone tonight with Carpenter on the mound. Then before you know it the whole thing will be over and Ill have to just wait until spring.
Ridley- yesterday I talked a little old lady into buying a copy of Parrallel Lies while in Sam's. She told me she was looking for a "real page turner". (Yes I always talk to complete strangers) I suggested you and she bought the book! I continue to spread the word.

Pam, good job! I too have talked to many people about my love for Ridleys writing. I joined a website called Bookcrossers.com and continue to mention what my favorite books are and who writes them. I feel we need to get as many people as possible to start requesting more Boldt sagas so that the publishers will start to pay attention to us! Ridley alread said he is willing. I can't tell you how often I wonder what LaMoia and Matthews are up to now. I feel like I've been cheating on Boldt by getting all caught up in the Jack Reacher novels and Harry Bosch novels but I'm sort of getting tired of waiting!

Blogger Pam said...

Hey Inksmudge- You are so right, I could really use a Boldt. I was just thinking about what it was about Boldt et al, that makes them so good. I love Bosch, but was struck by the shallowness of his relationships with women. It's one of the things I find interesting about Boldt. He has these complex relationships with people, and with each novel they change and evolve. Love it.

Blogger inksmudge said...

I felt the same way about Bosch and the women in his life but now that I've read a few more of the books his relationships are taking second place to his daughter. I like the fact that the stories take place here in Los Angeles and I am familiar with the scenery.

I have two questions-1) What did you think of Kenny Rogers' story about a dirt clump (vs pine tar) on his pitching hand? 2) Which parent are you- the one who stays behind and hands out the candy, or the one who takes the kids trick or treating? ( Also, are you wearing the mustache and robe?)

How do you decide what your book signing stops will be?

Who do I need to call to get you in Alabama? At least near Huntsville, Birmimgham or Montgomery?

:hope to feel a sick day approaching in the near future:

Hey Dean- LaRussa is really the only reason I can't get behind the Cardinals (well. and I'm a little envious too). Didn't see last nights game, my cable was out. I think Kenny Rogers is a barely contained loose cannon. What's so stupid is that if he did cheat, he didn't need to. Look at the way he pitched the rest of that game. Just like with Bonds and steroids, great isn't good enough. As for Halloween, it stopped being fun when my boys started wanting to go out alone. This year I hope my youngest (15) stays home, but probably not.(I'll be on the look out for missing TP and eggs). It will be a long night of worry, my dog barking (we get lots of trick or treaters) and too many Kit Kats!

ANSWERS:
(I've just arrived at Texas Book Festival in Austin.)

1) LaMoia was a drummer in one of my early bands. He owns a restaurant in Providence RI presently. Yes, he just came out of nowhere in the novels. I know him well, and he just started taking over. I'm VERY aware of him in each of the books, even when he doesn't take up much ink. He features in the next Boldt that I'm outlining.

2) Thanks for getting strangers to try the books. IT ALL HELPS!

3) After Killer Weekend (July 10, 2007) will be a second series novel with Walt Fleming. After that, I hope for a Boldt.

4) re: Halloween. I'm partial to taking the kids out on the street, as opposed to tending the front door.

5) Publisher decides book tours, but I work with my speaking agent to decide other stops. I will be in Birmingham in Feb - to speak to several schools. If a library approached me to speak that night....

Hey Ridley, Are you in Texas yet? So close and yet so far! I'm bummed, but can't figure out how to fit in 7hrs (round trip) from Sugar Land to see you. Too much going on. Oh well, hope you have a good time. Maybe Houston next time. A girl can dream can't she?

At least we are going to get a Fleming AND a Boldt out of you, even if it is after Killer Weekend.

Let's hope I survive that long.

Please, please, let the World Series end, so my favorite TV show 'House' can come back. I miss it sooo much.

Mon. 10/30- I hear ya Carol!

Hey Ridley, Here's a suggestion (cuz I'm never short on suggestions) How about creating something for YouTube? I just saw something for Michael Connelly's new book and several interviews with him. Another great way to get your name out there! Might even be fun. You could time it for the release of Killer Weekend!

At least 'House' was back on last night. Uh Oh, boy is he in trouble.

My beloved Heat got a bit too cocky on opening night and got killed by the Bulls. Come on Heat, straighten up!

Oh, poor Carol. I suspect that this is the year where we see that my Lakers made the right choice between Kobe and Shaq...

10:24 AM
Blogger Pam said...

Hey Jamester- Kobe? No way! Even I, a Calif. native had to abandon Kobe. He needs at least one more season of humility. And what about the Rockets? Tracy McGrady, Yao aand Shane Battier (sp). Could be good. I'm hoping to watch a little basketball to ease my withdrawal from baseball. (since watching my fav tv shows like Lost are driving me crazy!) I'm to the point now where I'd rather read the synopsis on Televisionwithoutpity.com. Very funny.

11:52 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh, I wasn't endorsing Kobe's personality, I fear that he's long ago fallen victim to "Acquired Narcissism Syndrome." In terms of likely basketball production from here on out, though, compared to Shaq...

3:29 PM
Blogger Pam said...

Oh Jamester, you are so right (and also just having some fun). The Shaq big toe is definitely a problem. Production or not, in a completely girlie approach to sports, if I don't "like" you, I have trouble cheering for you. Unless of course you are really talented and are likely to help my team win. Real mature huh?

Pam, nah, IMMHO that's whats wrong with professional sports these days, esp baseball. What the hell is a Dodger's fan to do if we keep adding ex-Giants to our roster. At some point they quit being "my" guys...I pine for the days a player stayed with an organization pretty much for his whole career. Imagine if Jerry West went to the Celtics...

6:11 PM
Blogger Pam said...

That's why Houston loves Craig Biggio. He may not be the best second baseman we (Astros) could buy, but he's played his whole career here (19 yrs.) and next year will hopefully reach 3000 hits here.

I wouldn't root for Kobe for a million dollars )well, maybe a million). But Shaq, Dwayne, and Zo? always.

They do so much charity work with the kids down here it is unbelievable, and I don't think they are forced too other than, 'Hey, would you guys be available on......?'

Hopefully they will settle down. With Pat coaching they should, he is tough.

Pam, never watched 'Lost'. At first I thought it was a reality show which I avoid like the plague. Then when I found out it wasn't, it was the middle of the second season and I figured I would be lost on 'Lost'.
My faves are 'House', 'NCIS', 'Boston Legal' (hilarious this season with the dwarf lawyer. I just love the way she gets them and the way she is played), 'Bones'. They also serialized the first Dexter book on Showtime and it is not bad, not great but not bad.

Jamester I am in total agreement with you as I was a very loyal Laker and Dodger fan. But I can't keep up with the name changes anymore (life is just too short). But I long for those days when you could root for your team and know who everybody was. Unfortunately sports have become to much about money and not enough about loyalty. Now I don't even know when my home teams are playing anymore. I decided to take up reading again instead. And now my favorite author can't seem to write fast enough for me!

Hey, hornedhopper. No I don't watch the CSI shows. Watched one CSI Miami and there were so many errors in it, I gave up. I get all the CI I need in NCIS. Whew, Mark Harmon.
As for Law & Order, I O'd on them. I truly think that in Miami you could watch them 24/7. I can recommend three excellent movies "Flags of Our Fathers' (Clint and Steven do it again), 'The Departed' great with Jack, Matt, and Leonardo, and "Babel" not quite what I expected but great. You gotaa figure any movie that can make Brad Pitt look like crap has to be good. I hear Oscar buzz for all three.
Ridley, when you aren't touring around, or stuck behind a word processor, or up in a tree, what movies do you see?

Had fun in Phoenix with hornedhopper and Alec. Now it's Miami for the Book Fair and an small Remainders crew. We play this evening at 5:30PM. Dave and I speak at noon. Then it's home and solid writing for many, many months. And I'll be more consistent on the blog.

Ridley - more of the blog would be nice. Today's question: do you read genres outside of crime/mystery? Other favorite authors? I've finished my second Lee Childs book (thanks for the suggestion) and will scavenge for more...

Fri. 12/1 6:45am- Hey I'm here. Also wondering about everyone. I know Carol is still alive, cuz she sends me funny emails. I'm going to post a short note in other authors.

Dean- are you out there? Hey- how about the Astros signing Carlos Lee? Pretty good, huh? Maybe Berkman can get some protection now. My husband seems to think he may not be a good fit for the locker room. Astros are pretty sqeeky clean, cheery kind of guys. You know, "go team"! We'll see.

Seems like we've been abandoned here. It's soooo quiet I can't stand it--I may have to scream!!! I think we need a thread called chit chat or something like that. Everybody must be out shopping or something. Also besides just the time of our post being listed it should also have a date or day or something. Oh well I'm just rambling....

I'm not shopping! We're iced-in in st louis! I'm working like mad on the various books. A newsletter coimg this week.

Yeah, Pam, I am still here. We don't get snowed in down here in Miami, we just get hurricanes, the season just ended Nov. 30. I won't talk much about the Hurricane football team. They have had to rally back from the shooting death of one of their players. They are going to a bowl game, I can't remember which one. The Dolphins have finally picked up some steam, but it is really iffy for the playoffs.
Now my question for Ridley, which he has probably answered 400 times on the old message board.
Ridley, when you start a book, do you do an outline or just start writing from your idea and then revise and rewrite as necessary. I have some friends who have persuaded me to write, one of whom writes romance novels and I don't consider that valuable input. Thanks,
Hope you got out of the snow and had a nice turkey day with family.

Ridley, ever thought of doing a supernatural/thriller with Boldt/Matthews?

8:52 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh, and when are you coming to Seattle again? The last couple times I missed your book signing sessions because of work or other commitments. And I haven't kept up on any new works you had published and noticed that you have published a new one (maybe two?). I will have to purchase them. The only other work I haven't read was Angel Maker, someone stole that copy from my library lol.

8:55 PM

Oh my God- Please don't say Boldt and supernatural in the same sentence! Yikes! That's so ... well it's so wrong. Sorry. Had to be said.

Pam, come to think of it, yeah I guess you are right, supernatural and Boldt don't go together lol.
